Movie Ratings
Rating: Respectability: Lovabiltiy:
5 A classic; a great premise flawlessly executed. Usually reserved for really accurate adaptations of great literary works; also used for the best of classic cinema. A beloved favorite; a movie I'm always up for watching, even if I've just seen it. Anyone who admits they haven't seen it is immediately placed down to watch (and if it happens to be a 1 in respectability-- well, I'll apologize first). I'd pay extra for a collector's edition (even if I already owned a lesser edition). When I haven't seen it in a long time, I get to missing it. 5
4 An imperfect classic. A solid piece of art that can be appreciated for the many things it does right (even if it does some things wrong). A favorite. I'll watch it over and over through the years. I'm usually up for watching it. When faced with the choice, I'll shell out for the expensive edition, although if I already owned the basic edition when the extended one came out, I'd probably just be happy with what I had. 4
3 A solid, well-made, respectable movie. It may not be One of the Greats, but it does what it sets out to do, and it even does it with some flair; it is, however, a movie, and not... A Masterpiece. A movie that I like "an average amount" for my collection-- which is still pretty high. I'll watch it many times, but there are some times in which I'm not in the mood. This is still a movie I would watch alone, however. 3
2 A mass-market, kind of schlocky movie; whether it's heavily problematic, or just... I don't know... plebeian? It's certainly not going to win any awards. It does, however, have some value; some aspect of it (writing? acting? production values? pick one or several) is objectively decent to good, even if the rest of it is kind of-- again, objectively-- just okay to crappy. A movie that I'll generally say I like although am often not in the mood to watch. My interest in it depends greatly on the amount of time since I last saw it, OR, someone else's interest in watching with me. It is rare that I would watch this movie alone. 2
1 There's no excuse for this movie. It's just bad. Bad in concept and execution. That's not to say you don't like it (a 1 in respectability could be a 5 in lovability), but you have to admit, it is not, by any stretch of the imagination, a good movie. A movie has to be at least a little lovable or I wouldn't keep it in my collection; but a movie with a "1" in lovability only just barely makes it. This isn't necessarily a bad movie; it could, after all, have a 5 in respectability; it's just a movie I don't have much particular affection for, that I find boring or hard to watch for whatever reason. If you want me to watch with you, you have to be really excited to see it, AND I have to not have seen it in a long time. I will probably never watch this alone. 1
0 A movie so crappy it's literally unwatchable. By anyone. I never want to watch this again. Ever. Please take it. 0
